Harnessing the Power of Myth: Using Archetypes for Personal Growth and Healing

I’ve been thinking about this concept a lot, especially in light of my recent wanderings through the country of Ireland. Something about that land draws me deeper into the mystery, magic and lore encouraging me to keep my eyes peeled and heart open to the magic and ancient power that is available to me if I only allow myself to be moved by it. But what is it about the idea of unicorns, fairies, queens, and knights that draw us in?

Understanding the Power of Mythic Stories

We all have our favorite stories. Maybe they're from the books we read as children or the films we've watched as adults. Maybe, like me, you're obsessed with Greek mythology. Mythical beasts, gods and goddesses, heroines and heroes—whatever they are, these narratives do more than entertain; they resonate deeply within us, shaping the way we view the world and what we believe about ourselves and what is possible. But why do these stories continue to captivate us? The answer lies in the innate power of storytelling itself, which allows us to overlay our personal experiences onto them and see ourselves reflected in the characters and their epic journeys.

And what is a myth, if not a story?

While myths are defined as traditional tales that often explain natural phenomena, cultural beliefs, or moral values, their themes resonate through modern fiction as well. Both ancient and contemporary narratives share themes such as the hero’s/heroine's journey and personal transformation that are relatable to our lives today. This blend of ancient motif and modern narrative weaves a rich tapestry that speaks to the timeless nature of mythic storytelling.

Myths speak a universal language, tapping into the universal aspect of ourselves, transcending time, space and culture. In them we find relatable themes of adventure, adversity, and triumph all of which echo the human experience. From the painful, transformative journey of Persephone to the magical adventures of Harry Potter and his friends, these stories embody archetypal themes that are both personal and universal, inviting us into resilience, sacrifice, intimacy, connection and the never-ending complexities of human nature.

Each mythic story serves as a mirror, reflecting the complexities of our own lives and providing insight into our wounds, struggles and desires. Think about your favorite stories. What do they reflect back to you? I think about my favorite book series as a kid and the main character Alanna, the woman-knight ‘who rides like a man’. I see my desire for freedom from gender norms and the narrative that to be a warrior makes you undesirable. I also see in her (and thus in me) a desire to pursue the things that matter to me— regardless of what society thinks I should be doing, or be like. See, these stories offer more than escape—they offer a way to process our own experiences, and to measure our personal growth against the heroic journeys of our favorite characters.

HEALING THROUGH MYTH

Myth, and mythic characters (see: archetypes), can be powerful tools for healing. Narratives that are set around overcoming great odds, offer us hope and a roadmap for dealing with personal trauma. An easy example is the Phoenix rising from the ashes standing as a symbol of transformation and renewal, reminding us that death (in the metaphorical sense) is an important part of rebirth. When we harness the power of the story we reveal new possibilities in our own lives.

What if I, like the Phoenix, could embrace the fire of transformation unto new beginnings?

Identifying with mythological archetypes is not only empowering, but supremely important for our psychological growth. These characters often exhibit traits that we aspire to—courage, wisdom, strength. Carl Jung believed that these archetypal figures are ingrained in the human psyche across cultures and history. When we connect with an archetype, we tap into a universal set of experiences and emotions, which can help us feel less isolated in our struggles and more connected to the broader human experience, as well as our own power (after all, we contain all of them).

HARNESSING MYTH IN YOUR EVERY DAY LIFE

Are you ready to discover the power of myth and how embracing archetypal stories can fuel personal growth and healing? Start by identifying a mythic story or archetype that resonates with you. If you need somewhere to start, check out Greek mythology. It’s chock-full of myth, legend, and lore for the taking (see: Athena for wisdom, Artemis for independence and protection of the natural world, Persephone for descent and rebirth, Odysseus for resilience, cunning, and the enduring human spirit of adventure, and Prometheus for innovation and the quest for knowledge.) Take some time to reflect on its themes and how they relate to who you are today, and/or use these stories as a basis for meditation, visualization, or journaling. Which mythic stories or archetypes have you always been drawn to, and why do you think they resonate with you? How do the themes from your chosen myth relate to your values, goals, and the way you view the world? What does it feel like to embody the traits of your favorite characters? How could exploring/embodying those traits serve you in your life today?
